I’m back at my camp location in front of the Arrowhead just north of Congress, AZ. on Hwy 89.

January was a busy month. While in Congress we had quite a few folks stop by for a day prospecting or just a visit. Folks from Indiana, Nevada, New York, California, Oregon and a couple more places.

Most of our visitors were folks looking for instruction and training in using their detectors. And, of course, access to gold bearing ground where their odds of finding a nugget would improve.

Several trips were also made to drywash. There was a gathering in Congress of local GPAA chapter leaders. We invited them out to our claims in the Rincon Rd. area to drywash and detect. There were 20 vehicles and ablut 35 people along. Most set up to drywash and test our ground. I’m happy to report that everyone who did so got some gold. It was a great day to be out and a good time was had by all.

We made a trip to the Kirkland area to check some ground there for a day trip. Many old mines in the area, but, we did not retrieve any nuggets there.

Quartzsite proved to be a busy place. The annual shows there had the desert just full of folks dry camping. We recovered a nugget and some drywash gold during our stay. 70 degree days made it hard to leave.

Here’s a few pics of January times:

It was a warm, sunny day for traveling from Congress to Quartzsite. We stopped in Hope for a bit and visit friends RVing there.

We’re looking forward to a bit of drywashing and metal detecting. On our trip here last year we did find a half dozen small nuggets.

Drop by and visit if your in the area. Take Exit 11 (Dome Rock Rd) just west of Quartzsite on I-10. Follow Dome Rock Rd. back to the east for about 1.2 miles and were on a rise on the right. Look for the motorhome.

Started heading south above 11 PM Christmas Eve, made it to the California border, stopped at a rest area to grab some sleep and wait for daylight before heading over the Siskiyou range.

About 8 AM Christmas morning, I started over the pass. Roads clear, little snow on the side and driving was great. Up and over and down into Reading where I fill the motorhome up with gas.  Then the strong head winds and rain started, fought that for about six hours and finally pull over into a rest area to get more sleep and let it blow over. Arrived in Culver City Sunday afternoon spent a couple evenings with my daughter and his two Arizona late Monday night.

Made it to the Arrowhead in Congress Arizona on Tuesday afternoon, met up with Lou and we got the motorhome all set up for the night. Wednesday was rainy and cold and Thursday turned to snow.

Friday morning, Kevin and Scott from Minelab stopped by the motorhome on their way to Stanton for an outing and training. Lou and I joined them at Stanton. Kevin gave an hour of classroom questions and answers and then headed out to an area for a hunt. We all caravaned to a spot that Kevin had picked out.

Kevin broke up the group into three smaller groups and assigned a group to each of us. That training was a big eye-opener for me. There were about 40 people, all with detectors and new to nugget hunting.  I saw only one pick. There were all sorts of digging tools and accessories, none was the best for the area.

Saturday, Lou and I were invited to Elly Loftin’s home for dinner. What a neat lady. She is probably the queen of prospecting.

The weather here has been improving to a point that we don’t need our winter coats and just perfect for detecting. We have been out both Monday and Tuesday with no luck so far.
