Deep Holes, Big Boulders

Bob & Bobbie Dunn from Oklahoma hooked up with me in early November and stayed the month. We got serious, to the point of using a jack hammer to bust up the hard compacted red clay, a cement mixer to beats the clods apart and come-alongs to extricate the boulders.

We had a crew working and everyone was taking home some nice pieces. There were chunks and pieces in this hole, not much in the way of fines.

As we opened the hole, Bob would do test panning at various depth levels. The gold was in all layers from the top down. We finally got the hole to about 5′ deep. The gold got less at that depth. The best layer seemed to be in the 3′-4′ range.

It was difficult work. Nothing on Rich Hill comes easy.
