Three years ago when I was in Arizona and was driving up to Congress, which is on the way to Stanton (a ghost town next to Rich Hill that is now run by the LDMA) I was thinking how much I missed Lou – a friend that I had met 12 years ago now on my first trip to Gold Basin. He became my detecting buddy, for a couple of great seasons, then unfortunately had moved back east and I had not seen him in 5 years.
On this trip, I stopped in the only bar in Congress – The Arrowhead. I went to an empty bar stool and noticed that there was a can of tobacco on the bar in front of me, so I ask the bartender if someone was sitting there. He slid the can to the next spot and said “not now.” When the person who had been sitting there came in, I turn to apologize for taking his spot and it turned out to be Lou! He had moved back and was living in the RV Park right there behind the bar.
The next day when I went into the Arrowhead, a young man across the bar said “Hello Bob”. It turned out to be a customer named Mark, who had just bought a Minelab SD-2200 from me before I left to go south. It just shows how small this world really is.
I ended up staying a week and going out every day detecting. Louis, Lou’s son found a ¾ oz nugget and a ½ oz. nugget just yards apart. Lou and Mel both found a small picker. Mark was camping at that same spot too. I came up empty, but had a lot of fun.
